You really don't need that many tools to turn your old drabby table into a new beautiful table. So lets get started:
1. Disassemble the table so that you can paint the legs while you are also staining the top of the table. Also work on dissassembling the chairs by at least removing the fabric cushion if the chairs have them.
2. Start by sanding the top of the table because that is where you are going to place the stain so you need to remove the current clear coat and stain. Once that is removed get a wet rag and wipe the table down to remove the dust and to open up the pores of the wood so that it will better recieve the stain.
3. Begin applying the stain generously on the wood surface. Note: (The longer you leave the stain on the darker it will be) After you have brushed on the new stain wait a minute or two and then remove the remaining stain with a clean rag. Continue to stain until you get to the right dark color you wish to achieve.
4. While the stain is drying paint the legs of the table
5. Once the stain is to your liking you can either use a spray on Polyurethene coat like I did or you can apply it like a stain from the can. I like the spray on Polyurethene because it gave it an even coat and is easy to work with. You need to apply 3 coats with the spray so one can should allow you to coat the whole top of the table.
6. Reassemble the table and touch up any spots that need touching up
7. Begin working on the chairs. Sand any spots on the chairs that are ruff or damaged. The rest of the surface of the chair you can just wipe clean with a clean rag ensuring that all the surfaces of the chair and clean.
8. Begin painting the chairs I bought Valspar (The perfect finish) it took about one can of spray paint for every chair. The paint does go a long way so I think I used at total of 7 cans with the table legs and the chairs. Make sure you are painting in a well vented area.
9. Reupholstering the seat cushions. I went to Hobby Lobby and bought 2 yards of fabric for about $15 dollars. Begin by taking the cushion and removing the current fabric that is attached to the seat. I used a screwdriver and pliers to remove the staples so that I could remove the fabric. Once the fabric is removed use one of the pieces as a template to cut out the fabric you will need to reupholster the seat cushions.
10. Take the cushion and the new fabric and place the fabric on the cushion how you would like it to lay it out. If it is a pattern you will need to be more careful with how you line the fabric up with the cushion. Then you will take your staple gun and bring the fabric tight on one side and staple it a couple times and then do the opposite side of the cushion. Once you have done that work your way around the cushion tighting corners and making sure you dont have any wrinkles.
Once that is finished put everything back together and you will have a beautiful table that will revieve complements for years to come. GOOD LUCK. Please comment if you have any questions or need help.
